Volume 2 is the second volume of the Deadman Wonderland series.
The chapter opens with Ganta at the Nagano school receiving his exam results from his teacher. As he looks at the results, his teacher states that he's only getting an execution but refers to him as Woodpecker. Ganta looks up to see that his teacher is actually the Red Man as he states that rest of them (referring to his classmates) are getting one too. Ganta then wakes up screaming in the clinic, scaring Shiro in the process, and she apologizes for eating his share of the snacks. The doctor complains about the noise and tells him to rest because of the blood loss then exits, muttering about not being able to take it much longer. Ganta remembers the attack and notices that other people in the clinic are talking about it too. They say how it wasn't a terrorist attack and comment about the Red Man's restraints whilst another talks about a rumor going round saying that it's the ghost of a psycho that was kept in the isolation ward. Ganta listens to one man as he thinks aloud about who he thinks is the Red Man. The man explains that about a year ago a man (later to be revealed as Senji Kiyomasa) had single-handedly blown apart the walls of a factory with his blood that was swirling around him similar to whips. Upon discovering this, he was locked up in isolation in G Ward. The doctor comes back to check on Ganta however, Ganta ignores him and runs off with Shiro trailing behind. Ganta, believing that Senji was the one who killed his friends, searches for him to get his revenge. In G-Ward, Senji is shown to be on his bed reading a manga when he uses his Branch of Sin to slice a moth in half, perfectly. Makina and her team analyses the attack and she deduces Ganta to be the prime suspect. Kasuga Kyōko compliments her and Makina commences "All Red" (a code for emergency lockdown on all facilities) and activates a Necro Macro . At the Deadman Wonderland grounds, a voice-over orders the prisoners to go back to their cells within 5 minutes and for N° 5580 (Ganta) to turn himself in to the nearest authority figure. In another setting, Tsunenaga Tamaki states that Makina is trying too hard when, Yō Takami confronts him about Ganta and the Red Man. Tamaki inform that the Red Man has been taken in to custody instead of explaining what he is but, states that Ganta is an invitee for the true Deadman Wonderland. Yō questions what the "true" Deadman Wonderland is but, Tamaki silences him with a pile of Cast Cards. Ganta, running down a hallway, hears the order for him to report back but ignores it and continues his search for G Ward. Yō tells Ganta to go and turn himself in but, Ganta refuses as he's looking for the murderer of his friends in G Ward. Upon hearing this, Yō realizes that he is innocent but explains that G ward doesn't exist as he shows him the map of the prison then, insists on him turning himself in. Shiro, now finally understanding why Ganta was running, states that she knows how to get to G Ward. However, Shiro refuses to take him there but, before she can explain why, the Necro Macro robot charges down the hallway at them. Despite the robot being directly in front of them, Shiro still remains in a huff then kicks a ventilation duct in. The Necro Macro fires at them but Ganta, Shiro and Yō escape just in time through the now destroyed, vent. The Necro Macro however, bursts through the wall and continues it's pursuit on them. Shiro turns a corner and leads them away, but Ganta trips on a wire in the process. Yō quickly jumps and rips out an exposed cable from the robot, buying time for the two to get away. As the trio reach G Ward, Ganta internally questions why Shiro is annoyed when suddenly, the robot falls in front of the door and fires more projectiles at them. Senji then hears the sounds of the robot and instantly knows that Ganta (referring to him as Woodpecker) has arrived. Makina and her team loose track of Ganta, Yō and the Necro Macro (due to the fact they are in a secret secluded region of Deadman Wonderland) and realizes why. With Ganta, Shiro and Yō surrounded by a wall of fire, Ganta apologizes for dragging them into this as he only want to avenge his friends which causes Shiro's anger to flare up and take down the robot with one kick. Whilst doing so, Shiro calls Ganta stupid and finally explains why she was angry with him (the reason being that Ganta kept going on about how his friends are all dead therefore, forgetting that Shiro is his friend too thus, enraging her). Ganta apologizes as Shiro triumphantly stands with her arms in the air. But this left her open and the robot grabs her by the waist. As the robot aims at Shiro's forehead, Ganta reaches out and tries to use his Branch of Sin but fails to do so. Senji appears from behind the Necro Macro and slices it in half with his BoS, then greets Ganta as Woodpecker.
Tsunenaga Tamaki is shown on an virtual world-like chat room with each participant represented by an animal avatar. Tamaki is interrupted by a guard telling him via computer that Crow (Senji Kiyomasa) is engaging in unauthorized combat in G Ward. Senji asks Ganta Igarashi (using Woodpecker) for a fight and guesses his answer will be "yes" or "yes". Ganta, thinking that Senji is the Red Man, charges at him with a pipe, but Senji uses his ring to cut the length of his forearm and activates his Branch of Sin: Crow Claw. In a split second, Ganta's pipe is cut up into many pieces and Senji is shown to have two blades formed from the blood spilled from his arms. Not only was Ganta's pipe cut but, Ganta himself is too. Disappointed in Ganta's lack of ability, Senji questions Ganta whether he is actually the Woodpecker and when he's going to use his Branch of Sin then, leaves once deciding that he is boring. Ganta doesn't allow him to leave and activates his BoS exclaiming that this is for his friends. Senji uses his Crow Claw to block the attack but the blades break and it hits him in the chest. Although the attack didn't seem to even remotely hurt Senji, he compliments Ganta on the fact that he managed to hit his heart then states that he doesn't even know what Ganta meant by "the Red Man" or his friends. Ganta becomes confused as to how Senji isn't the Red Man but possesses the same abnormal ability then Senji introduces himself and explains that it's his Branch of Sin. Senji. After realizing that Ganta thought only himself and the Red Man had that ability, explains that others in the prison known as Deadmen all have similar powers. He then challenges Ganta again but is, rather embarrassingly, stomped on by Shiro, pinned to the floor with her breasts at his face and told not to harm Ganta. Senji, blushing madly, tells Shiro to put his jacket on, as he is obviously uncomfortable by a woman's lack of modesty and informs her that a tight full-body suite is too risky. Guards then appear from the entrance of G Ward and tranquilize both Senji and Ganta. As Shiro and Yō are taken in, Shiro continually demands to know Ganta's whereabouts when Yō asks a more logical question about the Branch of Sin. The guard only briefly explains that the residents of G Ward are infected by the BoS but, stops there as his knowledge of it ends, stressing the secrecy of it, then kicks Shiro and Yō out of G Ward. As he closes the door, he threatens them stating that he'll erase their existence if they tell anyone and Shiro asks about Ganta again. The guard tells her to look for him herself and waves a handful of Cast Cards at Yō and sarcastically thanks him for them implying that he has stolen them. Ganta wakes up in a clinic and is buckled down to an advanced piece of machinery and Tamaki tells him not to move too much yet Ganta instantly recognizes him. Senji is then shown in another clinic as an unnamed doctor examines his x-ray scan. Referring to his broken bones, she informs him that it's because he tried to get out to which Senji tells her to shut up and put some clothes on (as she is skimpily dressed). She then explains that his sternum and two ribs are broken and replies understanding why it had hurt and that he's starting to like that kid (referring to Ganta). As the doctor tells Senji that he is in no condition to participate in tomorrow's 'experiment', Senji destroys the computer with his Crow Claw and holds a blade at her neck saying that it's his fight and he will fight in it. Back with Ganta and Tamaki, Ganta recognizes him as the lawyer he had during his trial. Tamaki doesn't seem to remember this as he explains that he has many faces and that he needs to use different methods to collect prisoners for Deadman Wonderland. He then states that he ensured that Ganta would be sentenced at DW unjustly which causes Ganta's anger to flare up and thrash violently. Tamaki then electrocutes him with the machine Ganta is buckled to, and teaches him manners in the process thus exposing Tamaki's extreme sadistic nature. Fortunately, another doctor stops him from continuing but, only so that he won't be useless for tomorrow's experiment. Ganta asks what the experiment is and Tamaki explains that he'll be in a show. The last panel on the page shows an image of "Crow Vs Woodpecker" which are the codenames for Senji and Ganta. Tamaki explains that it's a daily battle between two Deadmen with the prize being Cast Points and Candy. He also states that if he keeps winning, he'll meet the true murderer of the Nagano school massacre with the most important detail being the fact that Ganta is the only one he chose to let live and suggests that he has taken a liking to Ganta. He also corrects Ganta that the Red Man is actually called the Wretched Egg to which Ganta repetitively exclaims to kill both Tamaki and the Wretched Egg. Tamaki doesn't react to this threat with fear but grins madly and tells Ganta to firstly get on the stage at tomorrow's Carnival Corpse and states that he thinks Ganta will have so much fun that he must just die...
Tsunenaga Tamaki explains what Carnival Corpse is, as well as what Deadmen are, to Ganta Igarashi as he remains buckled to a torture device. Tamaki then goes on to explain what will happen if Ganta wins or looses and shows him an eyeball, evidently taken from another Deadman, to further emphasize his point. In another scene, Makina is prevented by a pair of albino Twins from entering the 'Head Room' but ignores their order and tries to step forward. The twins instantly place their bayonet rifles at her neck and order her to return again later. The Woodpecker Song is sung as a weak man is shown laying in a bed with multiple tubes attached to his body. In another part of G Ward, Senji Kiyomasa prepares for the Carnival Corpse by doing one-armed push-ups and wonders if Ganta is that strong or if it was just a fluke (referring to their last encounter). Shiro and Yō Takami are shown outside (after previously being thrown out of G Ward by a guard) with Yō eating a ration, commenting on its horrible taste, and Shiro urging to find Ganta. Yō states that Ganta has that "special ability" (Branch of Sin) so, he should be fine without them but, Shiro retorts saying Ganta is, and always has been, weak. Ganta panics about his Carnival Corpse battle with Senji and the high possibility of him loosing but is nonetheless, motivated to win. An overhead bird-shaped speaker welcomes the audience to the Carnival Corpse and briefly explains the rules as various holographic avatars are shown with one being "No Name". Senji and Ganta appear on the stage and when Senji uses his rings to slice his arms, Ganta remembers that he too needs to be bleeding in order to use his Branch of Sin and bites the tip of his thumb. The game begins and Ganta strategically runs in the opposite direction to Senji as he forms blades on his arms otherwise known as Crow Claw as he intends to go out of the blades radius but, still attack. As he climbs a tree, Ganta activates his Branch of Sin and fires it at Senji who effortlessly slices it apart. the sequence of Ganta firing and Senji slicing repeats until Ganta makes his bullets stronger and fires one at Senji. Despite Senji still being able to slice it in half, the pieces of the bullet penetrate the floor. The audience comment of Ganta's lack of ability as the "No Name" stays silent and observant. Ganta suddenly becomes cold and shivers as he is suffering from Anemia and Senji rudely informs him about the fact that the BoS is formed with blood and that all brats know what happens when you loose blood. Ganta denies this but his vision becomes unfocused and he becomes disorientated. The unnamed doctor states that an adult male has approximately 2L of blood and if a boy Ganta's size looses 1.5L of blood would be enough to send him into shock. Tamaki pointlessly asks what will happen next and the Doctor answers that he'll die to which Tamaki chuckles to. As Ganta's hallucinations and disorientation increase, Senji informs him that he has reached his limit and proceeds to slice the tree Ganta was standing on, apart and cuts Ganta as he falls. Ganta questions as to how Senji's blades could of reached him and notices that he had made the blades significantly longer without changing the amount of blood used. He did this by spreading his blood out until the blade had many hexagonal holes running through it and the Senji goes in for another series of blows. The Unnamed Doctor shows Tamaki that the crystal in Ganta's chest is identical to the ones found after the Great Tokyo Earthquake. She also states that she'll need to dissect Ganta for more information which Tamaki complies to as Deadmen are already on death row but, also because he has no need for a broken 'toy' if Ganta dies. As Ganta lies on the floor in agony, he has a flash-back of himself being beaten by Shiro (as children) and her telling him that he is too weak and no fun. A [[Sorae Igarashi|woman] tells Shiro that he is only a normal child and as such, will cry and chicken-out. After a series of scenes with Yō and Shiro (both present and past), Senji walks away from Ganta, uninterested, but Ganta grabs onto his ankle. Senji, surprised at how Ganta has enough strength to grab his ankle when his stamina and amount of blood are at their limits, looks down at Ganta to which he returns with a determined expression and Shiro proudly says that he (referring to Ganta) always gets back up. Senji jumps out of Ganta's grasp and Ganta shakily stands thinking about he reasons for being there, his fear and lack of understanding but refusing to allow himself to be beaten up. Senji grins with renewed excitement and Ganta fires another bullet but this time, toward the ceiling. This action momentarily confuses Senji and causes him to stop in his track, only to be revealed that Ganta was aiming at the perch the speaker was sitting on. Senji doesn't fall for it and slices it up into four segments. However, this was part of Ganta's plan as he used the time Senji was distracted by the speaker to get to Senji chest thus surprising the audience and Tamaki. Ganta produces one last bullet and fires it right against Senji chest, exclaiming his one and only identity as "Ganta Igarashi" and not any other of his forced upon names. As Senji is blown backwards, he grins and compliments Ganta by saying "dead center" which is what he usually says for himself after destroying something. After a slight pause, the audience explode with disbelief and amazement at the fact that Crow has been defeated with Ganta wearing a similar expression.
Ganta Igarashi is declared the winner of the Carnival Corpse match between himself and Senji Kiyomasa and he looks up in relief and amazement. Back in the main prison, a unnamed prisoner approaches Yō Takami at a drinking fountain and informs him that he has information on "that girl" to which Yō responds with shock. Shiro and Yō are shown wandering the grounds of Deadman Wonderland and trying to avoid the guards when Shiro bursts into song, and sings a supportive chant for Ganta until Yō covers her mouth. Yō explains that she can't sing otherwise the guards will spot them. Shiro replies saying she wants to see Ganta and Yō remembers what that prisoners had told him and states that they'll get into G Ward no matter what it takes. The pair hide in a building and see Azami Midō, along with another female prisoner, carrying laundry whilst conversing with each other. Azami then talks about the unusual disturbance that sounded like something huge crumbling and screaming the other day which Yō defines as Senji breaking the doors of G Ward. He soon realizes that he can get to G Ward from his position if she managed to hear it and goes to ask Azami about it. Azami however, punches Yō the second he puts his hand on her from behind, mistaking his actions as assault and Yō explains that he just wanted to know where the ventilation shaft that she heard the noise from was. As Shiro climbs down, Azami notes that she has never seen someone so abnormal in the women's barracks before then Shiro childishly explains why she also wants to know where the vent is. A scene shows the cylindrical structure of the rooms for Deadmen and then to Ganta sitting in his room (G2-15) holding a piece of Candy in the palm of his hand. He eats it and his face contorts with disgust due to the Candy's foul taste. After finishing the Candy, Ganta reminisces his victory over Senji which is soon interrupted by Chaplin Sukegawa bursting into his cell and welcoming Ganta with other Deadmen following. The other Deadmen introduce themselves as Minatsuki Takami, Idaki Hitara and Itadaki Kazuya. Ganta is shocked by them and Chaplin insists on a welcoming party for him. Later, the guards who had thrown Shiro and Yō out go to a vending machine to use the Cast Card they had stolen from Yō. As a guard swipes the card, he is shocked by the ridiculously huge amount (over 90 Million) of Cast Points on it. Shiro and Yō find the vent but are prevented from going any further by a huge metal fan rotating very fast and Yō thinks of a way of getting past this obstacle. At the party, Ganta is surprised by the quantity and quality of the food as he didn't think there would anything like it there. Minatsuki explains that even if he didn't have and Cast Points, he wouldn't be at much of a disadvantage. Idaki then advises Ganta to stock up on Candy in case he does run out of CP because his daughter, who is apparently always talking to him through his headphones, says so. Ganta, clearly disturbed by his company, turns and sees Itadaki being offered more food by a small robot. However, Itadaki not only devours the steaks in an instant, but also takes a massive bite out of the robot. Ganta however, decides that despite them being odd, they are also friendly and that he might befriend them in a similar way as one would when starting a new school. Chaplin halts the conversations and declares it time for the "Too bad, so sad" show. As Ganta turns his attention to the television, he shockingly sees Senji on the screen and tied to a chair. Chaplin only responds to this saying that Senji has always been sensitive to women but that he could never "get a rise out of him." The unnamed doctor stands next to a slot machine and Senji calls for it to stop with a calm face not long after. The slot machine stops revealing an image of an eye with the word "right" written underneath it but Senji's expression doesn't change. The Doctor nonchalantly prepares for the removal of Senji's right eye by strapping him down to his now reclined chair. She takes a tool that resembles and ice-cream scoop and ruthlessly gauges his eye out with intense pleasure as Senji screams out in agony. The Deadmen show little or no reaction to this and continue with their previous activities whereas Ganta stares with blatant horror and cups his mouth. In the watch tower, Shiro kicks her way into the room through the window and comically rawrs as she continues attacking the watchmen. With the guards distracted, Yō ambushes and kills one of them and suggests that the power should be shut down in section S-4 as he talks to an oblivious member of staff on the phone who complies. Once the power had been cut off, Yō checks to see if the fan has stopped and smiles seeing that it has. As the watchmen asks hims about the riot, Yō betrays Shiro by describing her to him as the lone culprit. Back in the watchtower, Shiro suddenly becomes eerily still and whispers that The Lullaby has stopped. Armed guards come their aid and fire at Shiro on sight. Yō looks from bellow an insults Shiro's intelligence stating that he knew that he would use her as a scapegoat. As soon as he finishes, the room which contained Shiro violently explodes as twisting flames erupt from it. Remains of flaming people fall from the sky as Yō looks in terror. Ganta is then shown hunched over a toilet internally exclaiming at how stupid he was for beginning to think that G Ward had normal, friendly people as he recalls that days events. More scenes show Yō fearfully gaping at Shiro's partially burning figure and then back to Ganta as he weeps about never being able to forget that this is his reality. A close-up of Shiro reveals her to be holding half a head of a person as well as being surrounded by other dismembered corpses as her clothes are partially burning. Shiro then brightly smiles as Ganta's thoughts narrate the scene as everything and anything being twisted in Deadman Wonderland. The Twins sit at the side of bed with an old and weak Hagire Rinichirō and ask him why he is crying. He explains that's he was thinking about the tragic pair of woodpeckers. He then sings the Woodpecker Song and reaches the part "he touched his friends, and they all died" as the chapter ends.
